"Employers who allow their employees to suffer in silence, will pay the ultimate price, as long-term absenteeism will continue to increase, alongside employees quitting under the pressure and stress of their jobs. Today should be the day that the business community stands together in support of combating mental health issues in the workplace." (Mental Health Today 27th October 2015)
Unfortunately I was unsurprised to read in the Mental Heath Today News that '76% of employees feel that management expect them to deal with mental health issues on their own time...' Many of the inquiries into our mental health awareness course, or stress management course comes from employees who are asking how to get their manager to sign up!
For us our courses are a 'no-brainer' not only do managers learn about how to recognise the signs that someone is suffering from stress, or mental health difficulties, but they also learn how to manage and support their employees effectively. The supportive techniques that we show people are specifically designed to improve the whole team, while ensuring the individual who is struggling is supported. The best thing - these techniques show managers how to understand different leadership styles, personality types, motivating factors, goal attainment and effective reward setting because understanding this is the key to having a successful team.
Another startling statistic from the same blog was that '81% of employers report losing a member of staff to mental health issues this year after not intervening early enough'. This suggests that a large portion of managers just don't know what to do - and ultimately the business looses out. A business that has 50 employees looses an average of £64,000 every year due to stress... That equates to having 3 full time members of staff! What would having a happy, healthy workforce mean to your business?
Employees need to be supported in work, and employers need to stop ignoring the problem - it is not going to go away. Our advice - don't be an ostrich. Adopt a proactive solution to tacking mental health difficulties in the workplace, save the company money while protecting your employees health.
