As I sat down to relax after another hectic day I noticed one of my friends had posted on Facebook about DIY SOS. The tagline mentioned homes for veterans, and the two royal princes. So I decided to jump onto catch up and find out what it was all about. Before I carry on I want to just say - well done to the team (all the hundreds of volunteers, and crew), and a special well done to Prince William, and Prince Harry. It was fantastic to see so many people give back to those who are struggling because of the things they have witnessed while protecting us as a nation.
I like many, am a 'forces child'. My dad was in the RAF, and although he worked all over the world we stayed UK based, travelling up and down the country, moving every few years. When I hear about people struggling with PTSD it is always very close to my heart. Although my dad seems to be one of the lucky few who served his full term, and did not emerge with the disorder, as a child we were exposed to children whose parent's went away and didn't come back. One of my elder sisters best friends was such a child. We also knew families who were destroyed when the partner returned home a very different person. Back when I was a child PTSD, although very real, was not something that was talked about within the camps, and definitely not outside in the 'real world'.
It was so moving to see how many people came together to recognise this disorder, and be proactive about supporting them. It was even more emotional seeing out two princes getting 'stuck in'. As a forces child you have a natural affinity for the Royal family and it was fantastic for the world to see that they share the feeling in reverse. Members of the forces fight for Queen and Country, and now it seems the Royal Princes DIY for them! Hats off to everyone who are going to make a massive difference to those who are lucky enough to secure a place in the Manchester street.
