Before I get you all depressed - let's just take a moment to say yey! Whoo it's Friday :)
OK, so maybe I shouldn't be quite soo excited about it being Friday but I bet you're thinking exactly the same thing :)
So are your team.
Why because there's something about a Friday which just makes you go 'phew' thats another week dealt with.
Then you look at that mounting pile of paperwork, or the gazillion emails filling up your inbox and your brought back down to earth with a thud.
Fridays and the weekends are great but Monday quickly comes around again.
It's even worse for us Brits because of how unproductive we are.
Earlier in the week the ONS released some stats about just how useless we all are at the moment:
"UK productivity was 27, 30 and 35 percentage points lower than in France, the US and Germany respectively."
That I could take but when I heard the dude on Radio 4 say this I almost choked on my cup of tea:
"... if we replaced all our workers with German's they'd come in do the same amount of work while taking half a day off on Thursday and chilling at home all day Friday."
You must be kidding me!
Then my brain kicked in and I had the aha moment because I knew why...
Because we're all stressed.
When your stress levels are through the roof even the simplest of tasks can seem like a chore.
Interestingly the BPS (British Psychological Society) wrote an article about rudeness spreading round offices like colds because of zapping out our resilience to idiots.
But I think it's deeper than that.
If you're happy and someone is a pratt you can just ignore them,
You carry on with your work and sunshine continues to flow from you much like in the old school Disney films.
If you're stressed then rudeness is like kiss-chase - someone does it to you & you just pass it onto the next person in the office regardless of whether you like them or not.
But because we're all stressed then it just keeps going.
Within half an hour everyone is angry, the world is ending and it doesn't even matter that it's Friday because you still have at least 5 hours to go...
Having a 3 day weekend would be awesome - could you imagine:
So how about we get sneaky?
March up to your boss right now & ask them if you can go home an hour early - fully paid - if you get everything you need to do today done.
You promise it will be done correctly and to the best of your abilities.
You make this happen by starting off relaxed, chilled and happy.
Even if the only thing you're thankful for right now is the fact that your office chair is quite comfortable - latch onto it.
Take a deep breath.
Focus on how without that comfort your bum would be sore and how happy you are that it is comfortable..
Take another deep breath and then go crazy for 90 minutes solid.
Get in the zone.
No social media, no tea, no coffee and no toilet breaks so get all that out of the way first.
Re-fuel and go again for another 90 minutes.
While it's not a whole day early - even an hour extra is a start :)
