I'm going to keep this relatively short because this 'truth' is really simple to explain (and not just because I've had a hectic morning and so am running out of time).
When I first heard of EI or EQ I was quite literally confused...
Why if this is a 'thing' had all my years studying and working in psychology had no one ever bothered to tell me about it?
Yes, new 'things' are discovered all the time in many different disciplines (especially technology which has gone crazy the past few years), but in psychology something this revolutionary I would have been told about.
Not just heard about from Twitter but really told about.
Pearson Clinical who control the psychometric assessments would have sent me an update to all the IQ assessments, the academic ability assessments and the mental health assessments.
But no updates ever came.
Slowly EI and EQ went from my mind.
Until the other day when I was talking to someone and they started going on about how high their EI score is and how this makes them a better employee...
Their organisation had just paid top wack for someone to come in and test everyone.
So I asked what transpired in these tests and whether the psychologist explained more about what EI and EQ are.
Only to discover there was no psychologist involved...
Now I'm thinking this is odd seen as all the psychometric assessments are licenced out, and require you to be pretty beefed up with qualifications in mental health due to the implications of any results...
But hey I'll roll with it.
Then he started describing his EI traits.
And I put my foot right in it when I said - you mean personality traits?
No, he was adamant its nothing to do with personality its his emotional intelligence.
Well considering I studied personality traits (and it's something I teach business and schools to hone in on) I definitely know a personality trait when its being described to me.
Not wanting to rock the boat any further I conceded it must be something so new which is why it's not something I learned about...
Got back to the office and jumped on the internet only to find a fantastic article on Inc. all about how -
"Scientifically, it's a fraudulent concept, a fad, a convenient bandwagon, a corporate marketing scheme."
"traits are essential to overall success, including conscientiousness, which is an excellent predictor of grades, managerial and administrative ability, and life outcomes, on the more conservative side."
I knew it! Conscientiousness - a personality trait!
The same shizzle I've been telling people (I have to say I did heave a sigh of relief after reading this article because at least now I can definitively say - it really is personality I'm afraid you've been conned...)
So please, please, please - the next time a consultant, guru or coach knocks on your door and tells you they can rate your employees EI & EQ scores for a princely sum, respond with a polite no thank you, I can access the Big 5 personality test for free on the internet thanks.
