I’m glad you asked!
Don’t worry it’s definitely not the same as any other type of training you’ve been on.
There’s no exams, no tests and at no point will anyone think you’re not doing a great job.
You can think of it like having a temporary fairy god mother (it’s always great to big yourself up!).
We help you unpick what’s going on, what you’d like to see in your family and show you how to get there.
Every week you’ll be shown how to use a new technique (which are all taken from psychological research and are used by psychologists and therapists up and down the country), and together we make sure it’s fully adapted to fit into your lifestyle, and is appropriate for your child.
Now, there is a little bit of a misconception about parent training and I am going to jump straight in to address this.
It is not an easy option.
You don’t get to skimp on your effort the minute the therapist heads out the door for the week.
It’s usually 12 weeks of disruptions to your family routine, having to do things you think are crazy, and overcoming your own internal battles to ultimately achieve some semblance of normality.
It’s not like on the telly – I’m sure you’ve seen supernanny and the other nanny type programs.
You really are the ones who have to put in the hard graft, day in, day out.
There’ll be multiple times when you end up crying, screaming and feeling like a failure.
But, the rewards if you stick with us are just phenomenal.
I remember this one lovely family which were quite literally at breaking point – and to date my most complicated case.
They’d been struggling to cope for over 7 years.
During this time things were getting unbearable.
So much so, the parents were often afraid of their children.
Can you imagine?
Being terrified of saying no, putting boundaries in place or even just having a conversation because you could be physically attacked, receive very real threats to your life or have every possession you own smashed to smithereens on a whim.
The parents were desperately seeking help and being turned down, rejected or just ignored.
A chance encounter led them to our service.
Meeting me was a weight off – I was their first professional who said ‘sure we can fix this’.
They didn’t believe me.
Parent’s often don’t right back at the free consultation.
But, they’re always so desperate they’ll try anything.
Thankfully, we do ‘fix it’.
It doesn’t take years.
There’s usually a huge difference within a matter of weeks.
Because, it’s the parents who do all the hard work.
They’re on hand to correct, support and guide their child every second of the day.
Now, if it were left to me then it would take years.
I’d have to move in with the family to achieve the same results and no one wants that!
In a nutshell, parent training is when you learn to put your faith in tried and tested methods to change the way your family interacts.
It’s when you decide enough is enough and it’s time to take back control of your family so you can learn to love being a parent again.
And this is why parent training rules over every other method of behavioural intervention.
It’s never about me.
It’s always about you.
It’s your family & I just help you get it back.
If you’re spending your evenings curled in a ball crying your eyes out because you just can’t cope with parenting – don’t leave it 7 years.
Get in touch and let’s get it sorted today.
Oh, and before I forget – the family I mentioned well they’re really bored at the moment because being normal just isn’t as exciting!
