A Shropshire independent mental health organisation is celebrating success after the implementation of their CPD accredited teacher mental health training programme at Hadley Learning Community (HLC).
Woodland Psychological Services Ltd, which offers a wide range of supportive services across the county, is one of the first organisations in the UK to develop a specialist proactive mental health training program for teachers.
“With 1 in 10 young people struggling from a mental health difficulty there is an increasing expectation for teachers to tackle this in schools, yet often teachers receive no formal instruction, nor support in this area. Our course seeks to redress this by showing them how to identify, understand and proactively manage pupils within the classroom.” said Managing Director of Woodland Psychological Services Ltd, Katie Woodland.
Upon completion of the workshop Tara O’Relly, Lead Teaching Assistant at HLC said "Within four hours we learnt not only about the disorders and symptoms that we may face within a school but also methods and techniques to support and encourage a student. We came away with so many more ideas to be able to identify, adapt and implement… and we would recommend it to anyone working within education or even working with chil
During the four-hour workshop, which can be delivered at the client’s site, delegates develop basic psychological techniques to help them to identify, understand and manage the five most common mental health difficulties in children. Upon successful completion teachers are able to access the modules online, and supported with 1-2-1 mentoring for two years to ensure effective, long term implementation.
“I’d encourage anyone open to finding out more about ways to proactively reduce pupil mental health in their institution to get in touch on 01952 796 062 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Katie concluded.
