I hope you had a great weekend?
Took some time out to sit back, relax and chill out?
That might be a problem.
You see, when you do things that make you feel good, you do more than just feel emotionally good in that moment.
You spark a chemical reaction in your brain and body.
It's this reaction which produces those hormones we all love and need to feel awesome - aka serotonin ('happy'), oxytocin ('love') and dopamine (reward).
Spending 15-20 minutes a day doing something that is purely designed to bring you pleasure is not something that should leave you feeling guilty.
It is one of the most important things you can do to stay mentally healthy.
In fact, if you're not doing anything else, it's probably one of the only things you should be doing.
But just doing it once or twice is not going to give you the lasting benefits you've been craving.
Yes, your body will feel great for the 15-20 minutes you're relaxing but if you then head straight back to something stressful you're sending yourself right back to square one.
Still, it's better than not doing it!
Most often, it's parents and caregivers who find this most difficult.
But let me ask you a question - what do you think you are teaching those you are caring for when you don't put yourself first?
That they should put everyone else first?
That you aren't worthy of even 20 minutes of pleasure?
or how about -
That they aren't important enough to put themselves first...?
OK, so this was a trick question - it's all 3.
We are social creatures and we learn by observing and copying others.
If you spend 100% of your time serving others and 0% of your time serving yourself you teach your children to do the exact same thing.
Do you want your kids to grow up thinking they aren't even worthy of having just 20 minutes a day to feel good in themselves?
I'm guessing probably not.
Now that you know this, what are you going to do today to make yourself feel good?
Go for a walk? Have a bubble bath? Read that book you bought 3 years ago?
It doesn't matter as long as it brings you pleasure.
