Much like finger prints every single person (even twins), has their own unique personality. Most people understand that an extrovert is someone who is more outgoing/social than an introvert, but often we never use this information effectively within our lives; especially not in the workplace.
Being aware of personalty can be extremely useful in increasing motivation, productivity and goal achievement of our employees. By understanding the individual differences of each employee leaders can ensure that they place employees in the right role, assign tasks which suit people and support people effectively when they are struggling. For example - putting an introvert in a front line, face-to-face sales role may not only be a waste of time/money, but could also harm their wellbeing. When we put someone in a role which is not in line with our personality things rarely turn out well. Most employers have a 'hobbies' section on their application forms - this is a goldmine to understanding the individual. For example if they like zorbing, sky diving and doing anything outside putting them in an office, by themselves will only ever end badly!
Just knowing your employees personality isn't enough. Make sure you acknowledge your own individual differences as this will help you in your role as a leader. If you are extremely creative, and love inventing, and finding new solutions to problems then harness that skill and complete the tasks yourself which fit with who you are. Assign the other tasks to your team - but make sure they fit. Leaders aren't supposed to do everything, effective delegation needs to be at the heart of everything. Know your self, know your team and lead everyone to success.
