You can think of Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) or Tapping as acupuncture without the needles. It is a way in which you can 're-set' your energy centres and successfully realign the 'flow' of your natural body frequencies.
OK, OK I get it, this all sounds a little 'hippy dippy' 'woo woo', but just bear with me because I am going to break down the science for you (oh & since 2016 the NHS has been investigating whether it can use EFT too ...).
Our bodies as energy
Before we can 're-align' anything we need to first accept that the cells in our bodies emit specific frequencies and these differ when we are well and unwell. In acupuncture and EFT the energy lines which run through our bodies are called the meridians.
Now, I know that this may still seem a little out there but, I'm sure you've watched a few episodes of Casualty, ER or The Good Doctor & noticed that people are quite frequently whisked off to an fMRI machine which uses a giant magnet to assess metabolic changes in the brain. The body either breaks down organic matter (catabolism) creating more energy or builds up organic matter (anabolism) using up the bodies energy. Similarly, a PET scan assess the radiation given off during these metabolic changes. Changes to the 'natural' order of these will indicate some level of disease.
You also, probably remember learning something about an old dude and E=mc2 in school? This of course relates to Einsteins theory of relativity where E= energy, m = mass and c = the speed of light. What is important to remember about this equation, particularly to the topic at hand is that: neither energy nor mass can be created or destroyed, it can only be changed into another form.
Oh, & if you would like something a little more 'woo woo' did you know that you can literally send love to someone from your heart (e.g., feel supper warm and fuzzy whilst imagining encompassing the other person with a bucket full of love) and their body will physiologically react... #freaky!
How EFT works to affect our bodies energy
When an acupuncturist puts needles into our bodes, they are doing so to disrupt the meridians and 'force' them to realign as they should. When our bodies meridians are out of alignment we can struggle from physical and/or mental health difficulties.
The veterinary world has used acupuncture for years to help animals with pains, particularly arthritis. As a child some 25 years ago, my family pet Labrador struggled with considerable pain as she aged and she would literally be carried into the car before heading off to the acupuncturists, then bounce out of the car afterwards as though she was a puppy. While, yes, the effects wore off meaning she would need to go regularly, it definitely makes you start to believe their is something to this!
EFT uses the exact same concept. But, thankfully, you don't need to know hundreds of different points just 9. Thanks to Gary Craig (the founder of EFT) millions of people worldwide have benefited from the rapid and almost magical (its not magic it's real life scientifically proven) effects of EFT.
But what does it 'do'?
The best way to describe what EFT does, with regards to mental health, is break the connection between the physiology and psychology so that you can work through a troubling memory and this in turn enables you to overcome the negative thoughts/thinking patterns which occurs in mental ill health.
The physiology, is the automatic responses our bodies have such as a panic attack often accompanying anxiety or PTSS, the physiology is the negative/worrying thought patterns and the memory is the event stored in the subconscious which is triggered by the current situation which sets the whole cycle in motion.
The only way to overcome any mental illness is by facing it head on & changing the structure of the brain to think/process information differently so that you can behave in a different way. Stepping outside of depression, anxiety and PTSS for the moment, it's this premise which led to the development of 'avatar' therapy to help people deal with schizophrenia. Being able to turn their auditory hallucinations into an actual person, outside of themselves, enables them to successfully challenge the disruptive thoughts. This is an amazing breakthrough as traditional methods of therapy struggled to effectively reduce auditory hallucinations.
