So most of you know about me, and how passionate I am about educating and empowering people to support those with mental health difficulties. However, many of you don't know what pushed me into this line of work. I think it's important to know who you're getting into bed with so to speak and so I'm going to bare all right here on this blog post. For those of you who are new to me, I'm rather blunt and what comes next might shock you.
So I’m Katie Woodland, and I launched Woodland Psychological Services Ltd back in May 2014. We're based over in Telford, Shropshire and we support individuals, businesses and schools by educating and empowering people to overcome mental health difficulties.
14 years ago I was driving down the M6 and almost committed suicide. I was working for a very well-known fast fashion retailer but being treated worse than you could imagine (it wasn’t sports direct but let’s just say I wasn’t surprised when all that came out). My manager was not just a bully, he absolutely enjoyed treating people like dirt – especially me because the staff loved me, and I was great at my job.
So back to that day.
It occurred to me I could just turn the wheel and I wouldn’t have to deal with what I knew was coming. Thankfully I decided to turn off the next exit and head back home. I was an absolute wreck. The thought of picking up the phone made me throw up, and in the end I had to get my mum to phone the store and make my excuses. I was 23
Over the next few years I moved through different retail stores, and it was exactly the same. The only difference – I decided I was not going to let anyone make me feel that way again, and instead I just compiled evidence to take up the ladder. Over my retail career I had 3 store managers sacked for gross misconduct.
I gave up on retail and instead decided to truly help people. Try to ensure other people do not have to go through the same as I did. I know it still happens. I know it’s happening right now. This is the reason workplace mental health is so important to me. I’ve been there, and I’m not ashamed of my past because I made it through. I’m only ever ashamed that it still happens.
While I understand this story can be a little hard to hear, I promise you it's 100% true. This type of behaviour doesn't just happen in retail it happens in a whole host of different organisations.
